Karma Automotive and BMW have reached a new deal that allows Karma to receive powertrain components, including high-voltage batteries charging systems and a wide range of hybrid and electric systems.
Although the company did not reveal any details, they confirmed that their next sedan would be available for purchase in 2019. It will include a plug-in hybrid powertrain and BMW-sourced components.
Although this is not much information, previous reports suggest that the model will be almost identical to the Fisker Karma, which was discontinued in 2012. The styling similarities aside, the new Karma or whatever it is called will include a few “noticeable upgrades” in key areas.
The powertrain for the new Karma is unknown, but it had a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 20-kWh lithium-ion rechargeable battery. There were also two electric motors. The car produced 408 PS (302 kW/ 402 HP) and 1,300 Nm (959 Lb-ft). The Karma was able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h (124 MPH).
Karma CEO Tom Corcoran stated that “The Wanxiang Group gives Karma Automotive an opportunity to bring back a stunning car to the market, with the partnership with BMW and their excellent track record being a great fit.” He said, “We will continue developing beautiful cars using the most cutting-edge hybrid and electric technology.”
