We were able to see the M4 Coupe, Series 4 Cabriolet and M4 Coupe just weeks after their unveiling!
Motor1.com’s French edition thought they were going to be looking at the new BMW 4 Series Coupe. They went from driving a 184-hp BMW 420i to the M440i xDrive (374-hp). (Test drive report coming soon). What the team didn’t know was that when they returned to the new BMW Group France HQ in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, there was a small surprise awaited us.
There were actually two surprises, as they saw in the parking lot a Series 4 Coupe, which they had driven earlier that day, and two mystery cars that were covered in tarps. The car on the left looked like a convertible while the one on its right was clearly a coupe. It wasn’t difficult to get an idea of the contents.
Motor1.com was not mistaken. The new 4 Series Cabriolet was right in front of them just 15 days after BMW had officially launched it. The car was displayed to the public at Auto China 2020, Beijing, September. However, it was the first time that the French crew had ever seen the convertible soft-top in real life.
Although technically, this BMW 4 Series is the first to have a fabric roof, it is purely semantics. The BMW 3 Series Coupe and Cabriolet were given the 4 Series moniker when it changed its naming scheme. Soft tops were available on the E30, E36 and E46 3er droptops. The E90 model was one of the first to use folding metal panels.
When I first saw the 4 Series Cabriolet, it was attractive. The profile of the 4 Series Cabriolet is flat when the top is down. Its rear end has a straight line.
The BMW 4 Series Cabriolet is set to hit US roads in March 2021, for rear-wheel-drive models, and July 2021 for all-wheel-drive.
The new BMW M4 Competition Coupe sat under the other tarp. The model debuted alongside the M3 sedan on September 22. This made it a very exclusive look. The crew also saw the 503-horsepower (375 kilowatt) for the first time, and were able to spot some things that aren’t obvious from photographs.
The grille with two large kidneys is the most striking feature of the M4. It doesn’t have trim around the openings, unlike the 4 Series. This visually distinguishes between the brand’s sporty and luxurious sides.
The grille’s horizontally slats also surprised the team. This area is usually covered by vertical uprights from BMW. This new layout allows you to see the radiators behind crosspieces.
This BMW M4 Competition xDrive is on display. It has a Sao Paolo Yellow body that costs EUR1,140 in Europe. The M Track Performance Pack costs EUR16,500. It includes:
BMW 826M style, black with double spokes, has 19-inch front and rear forged wheels.
M carbon-ceramic brake discs with gold-painted brake pistons
Carbon fiber inserts for front bumper, trunk lip spoiler and trunk bumper.
The M Carbon bucket seats deserve special mention as they were a surprise to the French team when they looked at the photos. These chairs look amazing in real life, with the bold mix of colors and the carbon shell at the back.
The total cost of the BMW M4 Competition Coupe is EUR104,550, and the model in front costs at least EUR122 590. The base price for the rear-drive M4 Competition in America is $74,700 plus a $995 delivery fee. It will be available for purchase in 2021.
