Hyundai Veloster N ECR Introduces A Bonkers RWD Electric Race Vehicle

The electric motor is located in the middle.

This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show has electric cars popping up everywhere. Hyundai presented a fully-fledged electric Veloster racecar. It’s called the Veloster N ETCR and is the first such offering by Hyundai.

The EV racer is very similar to its internal-combustion counterpart the N TCR. The ETCR receives a single electric motor in place of the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 350 horses (261 kW) and weighs in at 261 kilowatts (261 kW). Hyundai does not yet have power ratings available. However, a full testing program will begin in September. The most intriguing thing about the ETCR is not its electric power but the fact that it sends to the rear tires.

This Hyundai Veloster has rear-wheel drive. The best part is that the single electric motor is not located at the front of the vehicle, but rather mid-mounted behind it. This Veloster may look similar to the turbocharged front wheel-drive TCR but it is a totally different animal on track.

“Today we have witnessed another milestone in Hyundai Motorsport’s history,” stated Thomas Schemera (Hyundai executive vice president and head, product division). “We are proud and excited to unveil the Hyundai VelosterN ETCR, our first ever electric race car designed for ETCR regulations. This moment has been anticipated for a while and we are excited to open this exciting chapter for our company.

Although the interesting reveal is not very detailed, it is showing that this Veloster is sending its electric power rearwards in a mid motor layout. We are extremely curious as to what else lies beneath the vibrant graphics and huge rear wing. It will be the center of attention at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, September 12-12.
