Polestar’s Chengdu production facility in China could be a future range-topper.

Polestar has opened a large production facility in Chengdu China for its plug-in hybrid plug-in hybrid car, the Polestar1. It is a 619-horsepower (462 kilowatt), plug-in hybrid. The new facility will produce only 500 units annually and have a limited production run of 1,500 vehicles. However, this impressive plant will not remain dormant for too long.

We hope that the Polestar 1 will not be the last in a long line of halo cars for this brand. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath promised another top-of-the-line vehicle in the future, while production of the electric Polestar2 – a mainstream electric sedan – will begin at the Luqia, China manufacturing facility in 2020. It will likely be produced at the company’s Chengdu plant. Like all future Polestars it will also be fully electric.

He points out that it might not be a “halo” car in the traditional sense. Ingenlath said, “Will it ever be a 2-door GT?” Not at all. It could be any concept that we have at the time.”

The company has promised a third vehicle after the Polestar 1 & Polestar 2. The Polestar 3 electric crossover coupe will be available in 2021. A Polestar 4 and Polestar 5 will follow shortly after. At this time, it’s not clear what the fourth or fifth models of the Polestar lineup will look like, or when we’ll be seeing a second halo model.

The production of the Polestar 1 will continue in Chengdu for a few more weeks. The $155,000 price tag for the halo car is in the United States. It has a pure electric range that covers 78 miles (126 km) before it needs to start its gas engine.
