Audi RSQ E-Tron Off Roader Breaks Cover for 2022 Dakar Rally

The DTM-spec gasoline engine does not drive the wheels. It acts instead as an extender of range to charge the battery.

The LMS GT3 Evo II was introduced shortly after Audi Sport’s motorsport division unveiled another race car. The RS Q E-Tron has a completely different design to the V10 supercar. It was designed to race on difficult terrains, rather than on the smooth asphalt of a traditional track. Audi will be using the RS Q Etron to tackle the Dakar Rally. This is in preparation for electrified motorsport activities. The off-road monster is not only looking great (and sporting a fake singleframe grille), but it’s also very interesting because of its powertrain. The front and rear motors from the 2021-spec Audi etron FE07 Formula E cars are used to make it fully electric. The TFSI gasoline engine, borrowed from DTM, is an integral part the energy converter system that charges the battery while on the move. Internal combustion engines are used to extend range and operate at speeds between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm. Audi claims that the gasoline mill produces a lower level of emissions than the other engines. It emits less than 200 grams CO2 per kWh. A 295-liter gasoline fuel container is positioned at 1.1 metres (3.6 feet) behind each axle. A third motor-generator (MGU), which is used to charge the battery, is also included in the energy converter. This unit can be used while the RSQ E-Tron gets pushed hard. Audi Sport developed the racer for high-riding, with a 50-kWh battery that weighs in at 370 kg (815 pounds), and supports an energy recovery mechanism when braking.

According to Ingolstadt’s peeps, the total output of the electric drivetrain is 500 kilowatts (or 670 horsepower). The vehicle must weigh at least 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs) according to Dakar Rally regulations. Audi claims the RS Q E-Tron was tested in Neuburg earlier this month. It will now undergo a rigorous test program that will last until the end, which will include entry at cross-country rallies.
