2022 VW Jetta Gets a More Powerful Base Model and Updated GLI

R-Line is now the halfway point between the hot GLI and the Jetta’s normal trim, the Sport trim.

Volkswagen of America is bidding goodbye to the Passat with the Limited Edition. However, the Jetta is here for the long-term as the popularity of the small sedan is growing. The company’s third-best-selling model is the Jetta, which has seen sales rise by five percent year-to-date. It is also first in brand awareness and second in brand loyalty.

VoA will give the Jetta a facelift for the model year 2022. The Honda Civic rival has a new look thanks to a redesigned front and rear bumpers. Also, the Jetta is now available in three new metallic colors: Rising Blue, Oryx white, Kings Red, and redesigned grilles, both for the GLI and standard versions. New alloy wheels have been created by VW, available in two colors and ranging in size from 16-18 inches.

The standard equipment for the Jetta is an 8-inch digital cluster, while the GLI adds 10 inches. The entry-level trim comes with cloth seats with a Rhomb motif, while the higher-spec sedans have leatherette or leather upholstery. A Volcano Brown leather is now available, with a two-tone option in black. You can upgrade to the GLI for perforated leather seats, and many red accents throughout.

Under the hood, more significant changes have been made. The base Jetta has dropped its 1.4-liter engine to make way for a 1.5-liter unit that is shared with the Taos. The turbocharged four-pot engine runs on the Miller cycle. It is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight speed automatic transmission. The Jetta has a boost of 11 horsepower to a Taos-matching, 158 hp and torque of 184 pound-feet (253 Newton-meters).

GLI’s turbo-powered 2.0-liter turbo engine continues to produce the same 228 hp (258 lb-ft) and 350 Nm. The stick shift and seven-speed DSG are still available. We are pleased to confirm this. The seventh-gen Golf R brakes are still available, along with a multilink rear suspension that replaces the torsion beam rear on the regular Jetta.

The 2022 model year will see the introduction of a Sport trim to replace the R-Line if you desire a sporty Jetta, but are unable to afford it. The Sport trim rides on 17-inch wheels, has an electronic differential lock, stiffer suspension, black design accents and a headliner in black. This newcomer is available in the S trim, the entry-level SE, SEL and the flagship GLI. To better reflect its position in the range, the latter comes with a fully loaded specification.

The US will see the 2022 VW Jetta, along with its GLI sibling the athletic GLI, arrive at dealers during the fourth quarter of 2018. This sedan, which is faster than the Hyundai ElantraN will be up against stiff competition.
