Next-Gen Volvo XC90 to Get an Electric Version in 2022

There are still plug-in hybrids and mild-hybrid gasoline options.

It has been quite some time since Volvo introduced the current XC90. The midsize crossover turned seven years old this year, despite having been given a facelift last summer. It is a little old, but the original model was 12 years old.

The Swedish company won’t let its biggest model, however, reach this level of maturity. According to Autocar The XC90 will soon get its third generation model – it will also have a fully-electric version.

According to Autocar, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson confirmed this news. This is consistent with Volvo’s strategy of electrifying its lineup, rather than creating new models. Polestar is a Polestar-branded electric performance car that can be used in the Volvo brand.

Volvo’s new SPA architecture will be used in the next XC90. This platform will also be used to support future 60-series models and the 90-series.

Autocar reported that the XC90 will continue to be available in both the plug-in hybrid or mild-hybrid versions. Diesel will not be an option as it was reported previously. This is consistent with the company’s dislike of diesel engines towards the end the past decade.

Volvo announced that its next XC90 will be equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology. This will allow for hands-free and eye-free driving. Volvo customers will have the option. Future regulations will determine if this technology is legalized globally.

Volvo has yet to announce when the next-generation XC90 will be revealed, but it is expected to do so in 2022. Check out the 2023 Volvo XC90 as well as all the other upcoming cars in our future cars list.
