This is a large wagon for the money.
Station wagons still exist in the U.S. We recently have Audi, which gives us new blood, especially with the crazy Avant. Audi is taking a chance by bringing the superwagon to America, where many buyers prefer SUVs or trucks. Jaguar offers the XF Sportbrake at a starting price of $65,150. This is an example of risk. It’s 2020 and Jaguar dealers have a lot of 2018 models that they want to sell.
These are not base-model wagons, though. A report by Autotrader shows that there are many Sportbrakes left at American dealerships, including some First Edition models. These are often picked up by passionate enthusiasts. The car shown at the top is actually a Sportbrake S AWD, which sells for $59,273 in Washington at Jaguar Bellevue.
This is more than $20,000 less than the MSRP and even cheaper than a base model 2020 Jag. This is also the most powerful version, featuring a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 380 horsepower (283 kW) under the hood. The standard-issue Sportbrakes come with a turbocharged four-cylinder of 296 horsepower (221 kW).
Audi’s bold move to bring the RS6 Avant into the U.S. market is something we can all appreciate. Although we don’t know yet how much the RS6 will run, all indications point to a six-figure price tag. The RS6 is likely to be a difficult sell for Jaguar, which has trouble selling sporty wagons between $65,000 and $80,000. This market would prefer a high-performance SUV. The RS6 is more powerful than the Jag, so it will likely be a lower-volume vehicle.
In the meantime, America’s lack of interest in long-roof sports vehicles could lead to more lucrative deals such as the Jag.
