Mazda will display an electric vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, according to Automotive News. According to Yoshikazu Nagai (Mazda spokesperson), the vehicle was revealed to Motor1.com by a spokesperson from Mazda USA.

The vehicle is currently under development and has a modified Mazda CX-30 chassis covered in camouflage with the words “Mazda eTPV”. The vehicle that will debut in Tokyo is a brand new model, and it will not be compared to the CX-30.

According to reports, the EV will be powered by a 141-horsepower motor. The motor will be powered by a 35.5-kilowatt hour battery pack. Mazda will offer an option for North American buyers to extend the range of the electric vehicle’s battery pack, in order to reduce its limited range. However, a Mazda spokesperson could not confirm or deny that the car is available in the U.S.

Mazda’s potential to build an electric vehicle internally marks a shift in pace for the Japanese automaker. Currently, there are no gasoline-electric hybrid or electric vehicles sold in the U.S.

We believe that the Mazda electric vehicle will be a small crossover SUV similar to the Kia Niro. However, more information will come once Mazda has taken the wraps off it in Tokyo.
