It would be far too much for the platform to handle.

The bad news is that Ford won’t be making a droptop version the Shelby GT500. This information comes from Ford Chief Product platform Hau Thai-Tang, speaking to Muscle Cars and Trucks.

He said, “When we designed (S550 platform Mustang), we looked at the high-end and projected what has been historically possible to do.” “The GT500 was what I believe we project for. It’s at the top of the capabilities of (S550 )… we did not do a convertible variant because of that reason. It is important to determine the architecture’s bandwidth.

The GT Convertible is the most powerful Mustang droptop. The 5.0-liter V8 engine produces 460 horsepower (343 Kilowatts) as well as 420 pound-feet (569 Newton meters). You can choose between a 6-speed manual or 10-speed auto. GT Performance Package includes six-piston Brembo front brakes, revised suspension, Kbrace, larger radiator and many other upgrades. MagneRide damping is available as an upgrade.

The convertible version of the previous-gen Mustang Shelby GT500 was introduced for 2013. The supercharged 5.8-liter V8 produced 662 horsepower (494 kW) & 631 lbft (856 Nm). Only one gearbox was available: a six-speed manual. Ford made the vehicle only until the 2014 model, so the automaker sold the last one to the Brain Injury Association of America.

Ford is currently developing the next-generation Mustang. According to the latest information, the model will go into production in the fourth-quarter of 2022 as an 2023 model years product. It is believed that an all-wheel drive variant will be available. A minimum one-motor electric motor would drive the front wheels and a V8 would spin its back axle. A fully-electric Mustang is expected to arrive in 2028.
