Porsche will also offer all-wheel drive.
The next generation Porsche 718 will either go completely electric or keep its gasoline engines. It wasn’t clear if the new Porsche 718 would go fully electric, keep its gasoline engines or find a balance between them. According to the publication, Porsche has plans to make the model fully electric by 2025, according sources both inside and outside of the company.
This is not the only Car and Driver have on the model. The report claims that Porsche showed the fully electric 718 with the Mission R Concept earlier in the month. The publication says that the model’s appearance is clear even without the wild aero. Porsche must still overcome many challenges before adding another EV into its range.
Porsche is concerned about the car’s weight and has set a target of 3,650 pounds (1.665 kilograms). This is no easy task because batteries can be very heavy. Porsche however claims it is working on a shorter version of its PPE platform. Customers can expect the entry-level rear motor model to be lower than the dual-motor all wheel-drive variants. This could lead to 911 power territory. It is also important to consider the car’s range. Car and Driver report that Porsche’s target minimum is 250 miles.
Fully electric 718 will come in Boxster or Cayman. The convertible will likely keep its fabric roof. The front of the 718 will be similar to the Taycan’s and wider than you would expect on a Porsche. Car and Driver say that the 718 will be available in 2024. However, it will be available in the USA as a 2025 model. It will be interesting to see how Porsche achieves that goal. Olivier Blume, Porsche CEO, had reservations earlier in the year about the technology’s contrariness. However, the company appears to be working hard to overcome these concerns.
