Next-Gen GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado Could Only Have One Engine

Say good-bye to Duramax diesel.

The next-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon won’t arrive until 2023. According to a report by Muscle cars and Trucks, GM could offer only one powertrain when they do. It is the turbocharged 2.7-liter four cylinder engine paired up with its 10-speed auto gearbox. GM gave both trucks a minor facelift in order to make them more appealing for the 2021 model year. However, any major updates are still years away.

GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado currently have turbo-powered 2.7-liter engines. They produce 310 horsepower (231 Kilowatts) as well as 348 pound feet (472 Newton-meters), of torque. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 3.6-liter gasoline V6 and the Duramax diesel 2.8-liter powering the current generation trucks will not last. For comparison, the V6 produces 308 horsepower (229 kW), and 275 lbft (373Nm) of torque. The diesel produces 180 hp (135 kW), and 369lb-ft (475 Nm).

The new trucks will ride on an evolution to the current truck architecture, 31XX-2. Current trucks use the 31XX platform. The new underpinnings will make the trucks almost identical in every market where they are sold around the globe. The platform is used by the mid-size trucks GM sells all over the world. However, the U.S./Canada version has significant differences to the international versions.

The sales of Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon declined in 2019 compared with 2018, at 32,825 versus 33.492 versus 122,304 and 134,842, respectively. Although we won’t know whether the new models will reverse this trend, auto sales are in a very uncertain moment due to an unprecedented crisis. It is still some time before the new trucks arrive, and there are many things that could change between now and 2023. GM’s next-generation mid-size pickups will not offer a wide range of powertrains, at least for the moment.
