Emerson Fittipaldi and Roger Penske were also part this 911’s special history.
This is a Porsche 911 that has a special pedigree and is currently being sold by Florida-based Atlantis Motor Group. It is unique for its intrinsic qualities and preparation, as well as the list of previous owners.
This Porsche 911 IROC RSR is straight from 1974 with its yellow Fittipaldi livery. The car was part of the first International Race of Champions (IROC), which brought together the top drivers from different racing leagues to race on identically prepared cars. There were 15 copies made of the 911 IROC RSR.
Emerson Fittipaldi drove this car at the time. This Sahara Beige 911, chassis number 9114600100 was qualified for pole with Fittipaldi at the wheel. He would have started at the front had he not been late to the driver’s meeting. This resulted in him finishing 11th place. He tried his best to fight his way back to the front but he lost his way and suffered a fuel leak. This ended his IROC competition for the year.
Roger Penske supervised Penske Productions and all 15 IROC Porsche 911s were sold at first to Penske Productions. Penske Productions purchased all 15 IROC Porsche 911s. However, the IROC series had different rounds that eliminated drivers so he didn’t need them all for future races. This car was sold to John Tunstall shortly after Fittipaldi left. Tunstall raced the car in IMSA from 1978 through 1978 and made appearances at the 12 Hours of Sebring as well as the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Pablo Escobar, a notorious Colombian cocaine dealer, purchased the car shortly after. The car raced through his tenure, but was modified with a 935-body. Roger Penske found the car again after Penske discovered it. He restored the car to its original “Fittipaldi” livery.
According to the seller’s description, a 911 IROC RSR that was sold previously for over $2 million is listed. This 911 is currently not listed at a price.
