The company also tested its collision avoidance systems.

Companies and automakers seem determined to make flying vehicles a reality, despite the dangers and limitations. Although there have been many concepts and many promises, they are still a dream. Although it’s unlikely that this dream will become a reality, companies such as Alauda Aeronautics are making big strides towards imagining it. Airspeeder is a flying electric race car developed by the company.

The electric VTOL (vertical taking-off and landing vehicle) is currently in testing. Recently, the company flew two racers together to prepare for the EXA racing series which will begin later in the year. These races will be controlled remotely by pilots who will also control the Airspeeder crewed races that will take place next year. The vehicle’s unique collision avoidance system, which uses radar and LiDAR technologies to create a virtual forcefield around each vehicle, is a key element of safety testing. Matt Pearson, founder of Airspeeder, stated that racing provides the space and place for long-promised electric flying vehicles to be developed. “Creating systems and technologies that allow them to fly safely in close proximity is key to this.”

The Mk3 is the current version of the vehicle. It weighs in at 100 kg (220 pounds) and can travel over 120 km/h (75 miles/h). It also uses a lot carbon fiber in its construction – it is in the fuselage and monocoque bodies as well as in the frame. The vehicle’s slide-and-lock removal and replacement system makes it easy to replace batteries quickly. The ability to choose from different sizes of batteries will allow teams to make pit stops quickly and create interesting racing strategies. Analysts expect the market to grow substantially over the next 20-years, and companies are placing big bets. It remains to be seen if these predictions are true, as there are many regulatory hurdles that prevent anyone from taking to the skies. Although flying cars and other VTOL devices will be successful in the future it is unlikely that they will be your main mode of transportation to work.
