It could have a range of more than 435 miles.
The current-generation BMW 3 Series (G20), has been in production since late 2018, but has not received the Life Cycle Impulse (LCI). However, a new report attempts to preview the next-gen car. The new model will be a hybrid of the current model and the combustion-engined version. However, it will use the same CLAR platform. A 3 Series that is built on an electric platform is expected to be released in 2025. According to , BMW is launching the Neue Klasse architecture using a zero-emissions 3 Series known internally as the “NK1”. The ICE-powered model will not be replaced as the new sports sedan will see a new generation of gasoline and diesel engines. This will allow the Bavarian brand to do all the same things as Porsche with its gas and electric Macan.
The 3 Series without combustion engine was designed from the beginning to be an EV. It will have a longer wheelbase, a flat floor and be significantly larger than the traditional model. The 3 Series is available in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration and a more powerful dual-motor xDrive model. According to reports, an “electric-centric” design is being planned. This will likely have shorter front and back overhangs to increase the wheelbase and provide improvements in packaging as you would expect from an electric car. BMW plans to use aluminum in combination with a carbon-fiber “cage” structure and CFRP in certain areas. This will help reduce the weight penalty from electric bits.
The interior details are not available at this time, but the report states that BMW will be focusing on an eco-friendly cabin made with recycled materials. This is similar to the Vision Circular concept which was displayed at the IAA Munich exhibition in September. Autocar mentions a sedan but it is likely that the Touring will be available without combustion engines. BMW has developed the electric motors themselves. They are more powerful and more efficient than current EVs. For the electric 3er, fast charging at 350 kilowatts will be possible. This is an improvement on current battery technology that can deliver more than 435 miles (700 km) of range. Frank Weber, the company’s chief of research and development, has hinted that the Neue Klasse platform was being designed for performance models. Therefore, an M-branded 3 Series EV appears likely.
