You could get it for as low as $200,000.
Classic car customizer George Barris, who was known throughout the 1960s and until his death in 2015 as “The Kings of the Kustomizers”, was well-known. Barris, along with his colleagues Dean Jeffries, Ed Roth and Gene Winfield, created some of the most immediately recognisable hot rods of all time. This car doesn’t fall into the ‘hot rod’ category per se. It’s a 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS and one of a few custom cars in Barris’ private collection. It was bought new in 1978, and received the most recent aftermarket treatment. It’s now up for sale in St. Louis at a asking price $200,000.
This Ferrari is not your average Ferrari. The 308 has a wider body kit, flared front and back fenders, extra-wide BBS wheels, and tires to match. Barris replaced the pop-up headlights with headlamps below the bumper grille. The front fascia was also updated with a custom grille, and a new spoiler for the chin.
Because it is Italian, the body is finished with a metallic gold and copper two-tone paint job. The beltline is separated by red, green, and white stripes. Pinstriping was done in real gold leaf throughout the body and on the BBS alloy wheels.
The interior has been reupholstered in brown and beige leather with accent stripes in red, white and green to match the exterior. The instrument cluster has a digital custom fitment and several period-correct upgrades such as a Sony television and Kenwood audio systems, as well as a backup camera.
The 308 was a Barris original and made a brief appearance in the TV series Knight Rider. The car was “Dagger-X,” a villain to Michael Knight. The car is in excellent condition, having driven only 8,000 miles (12.874 kilometers) since its new date. The car is available for sale at Hyman, Ltd. in St. Louis, Missouri.
