Ford Mustang Hybrid Might Still Pack A Powerful V8

Two batteries are used to power a V8 engine, according to patent filings.

Ford’s future plans include an sporty, electric crossover that Bryan Cranston hinted at, as well as an electric F150 and a Focus-based pickup. The Ford’s electrified Mustang is a surprise under the radar. New patent filings suggest that the hybrid pony car could be in the works.

A patent filed by Ford in 2017, but Autoguide recently published, this week, shows a “twin-motor drive system for hybrid vehicle.” This sketch shows a V8 engine that has hybrid components. Is this the confirmation of Ford Mustang’s powertrain? It’s not clear how it would work, but we do know what it looks like.

Ford Mustang Hybrid Might Still Pack A Powerful V8

A V8 internal combustion engine would power the rear wheels. Two electric motors would drive the front of the car from the front. They are “mounted directly on opposing sides” of the engine, according to the patent. It would be an electrified Mustang, a first for pony cars, and also possible all-wheel drive.

It’s worth noting that a lot of this evidence is still very vague. Although the patent is intriguing, Ford has not yet confirmed that it applies to the hybrid Mustang. Yet. The Mustang should be able to catch up with the hybrid Challenger, which will soon be available, and the Corvette, which will get a hybrid model of 1,000 horsepower. This could be evidence.

The 2020 hybrid Mustang is expected to be available. Ford promises that the hybrid Mustang will be more efficient but still retain its V8 power and more torque at low speeds.
