Unrestored Mercedes 300 SL was sold in Greece recently under extraordinary circumstances.

The story began almost 50 years ago, when the model was rolled off the production line with a three-liter straight six engine producing 240 PS (177kW / 237hp). Kriton Dilaveri bought it, an avid racer. Dilaveri gave the car to the city after his 1972 death. The car sat in a city lot for many decades, seemingly destined to be scrapped until Vassilis Michaloliakos decided to auction it.

Rajna Hildebrandt bought the car for EUR405,000 ($558,600) in fierce competition. The city will use the funds in honor of Dilaveri’s generous gift to keep a park that will continue his legacy long after his passing.
