It won’t, however, be the most powerful member the new 5 Series family.
The next-generation BMW 5 Series has already been seen on the streets in camouflaged form. We saw the Bavarian sedan in July and have some idea of its size and shape. A new report sheds light on the underpinnings of the Bavarian sedan.
Autocar The next-generation 5 Series model will feature a variety of technologies and will be highly electrified. We know that it will come with either a gasoline engine or a hybrid system. A fully electric version is also in development. This might be of greater interest to the BMW The new M5 will be a hit with enthusiasts, relying on a plug in hybrid powertrain.
Autocar states that the electrified system will use a BMW S63 twin-turbo V8 engine and an electric motor to produce an additional 200 horsepower (149 milliwatts). The system’s combined output could reach 750 horsepower (559 kW), which should be sufficient to offset the extra weight of the electric motors and batteries.
BMW plans to make a model that sits below the full-blown BMW M5, but it may lose its V8 engine for a hybridized 3.0-liter Inline-Six. Autocar suggests that it could be an upgraded version of the 545e hybrid plug-in with approximately 500 horsepower (373 kW). It is likely that the N63 twin-turbo V8 (N63 twin-turbo) will be retired. This vehicle dates back to the original-gen X6. Upgrades to meet Euro 7 emission standards will not be possible.
According to the British publication, the 5 Series could be given an all-electric performance model that is based on the BMW i5. Although it is too early to know, the model could be available with 800 horsepower (597 kW) and surpass the M5.
