2019 Kia ProCeed brings shooting brake styling to Paris

Practicality is almost the same as the Ceed Sportswagon, but the Ceed GT is just as sporty.

The stunning ProCeed concept, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show a year ago, is a sign that great things are on the horizon for Kia. These “things” are now in production and take the form of a shooting brake or its GT counterpart. The new ProCeed is a stylish family hauler that’s more fashionable than the Sportswagon, without having to sacrifice practicality.

Kia has ditched the three-door coupe for a more versatile body that doesn’t really have a competitor. The Mercedes CLA Shooting brake is also available, but it will cost you significantly more to get into the premium segment. To differentiate itself from other Sportswagons, the ProCeed will only be available in GT Line and GT models.

It’s not surprising that the long-roof version inherits both the 1.0-liter and 1.4-liter gasoline engines and the 1.6-liter diesel engines of the regular Ceed. The Ceed GT also has a punchy 1.6 liter gasoline unit. The sporty version will deliver 201 horsepower and 265 Newton meters (195 pound-feet), of torque to the front wheels via either a standard six speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission.

The ProCeed’s cargo capacity is almost as good as the Sportswagon. With the rear seats in place, it holds 594 liters (21 cubes) which is nearly equal to the 600 liters (21.1 cubes) in the standard wagon. Kia did a fantastic job in modifying the ProCeed’s roofline and rear end to make it more attractive without compromising its practicality.

The LED strip running the length of the back is a nice addition that allows the fancier version to be distinguished from the more basic Sportswagon. The roof-mounted spoiler has been redesigned with a trapezoidal third brake lamp. While the ProCeed lettering at the tailgate emphasizes that this wagon is not your average one, it also features a redesigned spoiler. The wagon’s spoiler is slightly longer (+5 millimeters/0.2 inches) and lower (-43 Millimeters/1.7 inches) to give it a more sleek look. However, the ground clearance has been reduced.

The new ProCeed GT and ProCeed GT will be on display by Kia at the Paris Motor Show next month. They will also be joined by the Ceed GT. The new shooting brakes will be in production by November. They will go on sale in Europe only from the first quarter 2019.
