Porsche Dealers Say Boxster And Cayman Going Electric Around 2025

The evidence is beginning to mount.

In 2017, Porsche teased a concept for an all-electric Cayman, positioning it to be a stepping stone on its EV development journey. Five years later, evidence is mounting that the all-electric Cayman and Boxster will be a reality. According to a new report from Porsche dealers, the two 718 models will go all-electric in 2025. This is not the first time we have heard about this possibility.

Rumours that Porsche would electrify its next-gen Cayman or Boxster first surfaced in 2019, and haven’t stopped. A recent report stated that Porsche had shown the Mission R Concept fully electric 718. It debuted in September. The concept was race-inspired and featured a broad, Taycan-like frontend with a wider rear end and a taillight bar that spans the width, which is consistent with the description dealers are offering.

According to Automotive News, dealers saw a Boxster with a front design that was similar to the all electric sedan, and a full-width taillight arrangement. This is in keeping with September’s report on the possible new models. According to one dealer, the Boxster “looks amazing” and is “sporty-looking.”

According to the report, dealers were informed that the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster all-electric vehicles would be available for purchase in 2025. This is consistent with other rumors. The new 718 could be rolled out in a gradual manner, with the car arriving in the US in 2024, as has been the case before.

Porsche has some challenges to overcome before the all electric two-door goes on the streets. Porsche is developing a shorter version of its PPE platform to reduce the model’s weight. Porsche is concerned about the model’s weight due to its heavy batteries. It will be difficult to pack an all-electric motor into a compact, sporty two-door. Porsche is confident that these hurdles will soon be overcome.
