Toyota Introduces a Race Car Version of its Upcoming Hypercar

It is larger and heavier than the predecessor.

It’s been roaring since the beginning of the year. Now, you can see it in its full livery and without the wraps. Toyota has finally revealed the Toyota GR010 hybrid racing car as its Le Mans competitor. The 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship, (WEC), is just around the corner. With its new race car, the Japanese marque hopes to start a new era in endurance racing.

Moreover, the GR010 hypercar showcases its road-going counterpart, the Toyota GR Super Sport. This version made its public debut at the 88th. Le Mans at Circuit de la Sarthe. Toyota says that the GR010 hybrid racecar was created over the past 18 months at the headquarters of the team in Cologne, Germany. Higashi Fujiji, Japan, developed the electric hybrid powertrain.

The GR010’s V6 twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 670 horsepower (500 kilowatts), and powers the rear wheels. The electric powertrain can send up to 268 horsepower (200 kW), of boost to front wheels.

The GR010 measures 250mm longer, 100mm wider and 100mm taller than its TS050 predecessor, the LMP1. It is also heavier than its predecessor, the TS050 LMP1 and measures 1,040 kg (2,293 lb). This is just a fraction over the minimum weight required by the FIA Hypercar category.

Toyota has confirmed that it will defend the WEC drivers’ and manufacturers title titles as well as Le Mans crown. Jose Maria Lopez, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi will be driving Toyota’s #7 entry. Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima will be racing the #8 GR010.

Toyota remains mum on the development of the GR Super Sport’s current production version. Although reports have suggested that the GR Super Sport could make its debut in 2023, we aren’t expecting that to happen.
