This particular vehicle is the last prototype remaining and has been nicknamed the black bomber due to its matte-finished exterior. Although the design is reminiscent of the 959, the cabin looks more like the 911 from this time. Strangely, the front fascia lighting seems to be from 928.
The powertrain would have made this 965 truly special. It would have shared the 959’s all-wheel drive system and self-leveling suspension. It was possible to get a Porsche dual-clutch gearbox in an early version.
The 965 was to be available for purchase in 1990. Porsche would have called the 969 the 965 if it had actually made it to dealers. This was because the machine combines elements from the 964/959. They expected to sell 2,500 per year.
This video shows the prototype for radiator testing. The cylindrical shape of the cooling devices behind this inlet is typical. This layout may be to maximize the area within the small space.
This car is powered by an Audi-sourced engine. This was only for testing. The production version would have a Porsche-built eight-cylinder engine. The engine would have allowed the vehicle to reach a maximum speed of 180 mph (290 km/h), which is good for 1990 standards.
Porsche had to cancel the model due to high costs associated with the 965 project. The company instead focused its efforts on the relatively simple development of the 911 Turbo for 964 generation.
