Porsche CEO: EVs “unbeatable”
The European Union proposes an aggressive policy to prohibit the sale of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. This proposal is still not in force and would have a major impact on the largest automakers worldwide. Not all member countries are keen to adopt such a policy. Italy seeks leniency from the proposed ban on its supercar manufacturers, but that position doesn’t please Porsche.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told Bloomberg He believes it would be a mistake for EU to provide such an exemption. Blume’s reasoning is logical. Blume believes electric vehicles will continue to improve, telling the publication that “electric within the next decade will unbeatable.” EVs have proven their superiority over other cars, and this will only increase as automakers develop the technology. Blume stated that everyone must contribute to the decarbonization of companies.
The policy carve out would benefit Ferrari and Lamborghini as well as others such Pagani. Lamborghini and Ferrari are not shying away form developing electric vehicles. Ferrari stated last month that it was okay with the proposed ban on 2035. Rumours suggest that the company could launch its first fully electric vehicle in 2025. Lamborghini follows its Italian counterpart, with hybrid versions of all models expected to arrive by 2024. The first EV will be available sometime after 2025.
As more automakers develop their own models, EV technology will improve. For smaller brands such as Lamborghini and Ferrari, this will make it easier to switch to EVs. Pagani and other niche companies are the most important concern. The electric vehicle has the potential to outperform today’s supercars and technological advancements will only make it cheaper and more efficient. Even though the proposed ban must be approved, 2035 is still more than a decade away. There are many things that could change before the year is here.
