This compact Nio is designed to appeal to mass markets.
Nio seems to be heading in the right direction when it comes to EV startup. Five new models have been introduced by the Chinese company in just five years. This feat is remarkable considering the number of years that the company has been operating. Nio currently offers four vehicles: three crossovers and a large sedan. The EP9 is an EV hypercar.
Other models in Nio’s lineup include the EC6 coupe, ES6 full-size crossover and ES8 full size crossover. The ET7 flagship sedan will also be available in Chinese showrooms in the early 2022. The company just unveiled its sixth model. It’s called the ET5, and it’s aiming for mass appeal and Tesla 3 sales.
The ET5’s styling is very similar to the ET7. It’s not surprising, considering the ET5 was designed with efficiency and aerodynamics in mind just like the larger sedan. The front bumper and lights are slightly different. The most noticeable difference is the longer foglight housings, and the aero intakes at the corners. The rear has a shorter, more rounded tail. The pods on top of the car are responsible for the advanced driver safety suite. The ET5 measures 188.6 inches (4.790 millimeters), from bumper to bumper. It measures 77.1 inches (1.960 mm) in width and is 59.0 inches (1.498 mm tall). The ET5’s wheelbase measures 113.7 inches (2.888 mm). These figures suggest that the ET5 is at the larger end in the compact executive sedan market.
The interior theme is similar to most EVs, but with more screens and open spaces than buttons. The large infotainment screen, which is more rectangular than square, takes center stage. The instrument cluster is also found on the floating 10.5-inch screen. Ambient lighting is available in 256 colors. Audio is provided by the Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround audio system. PanoCinema is another feature of the ET5. According to the company, it is a digital cockpit that can be viewed from a 360 degree angle. The automaker has partnered with NREAL to create AR and VR technology. It was developed by NREAL exclusively for Nio. We are excited to see it in action.
The Nio ET5 has a two-motor system and three options for batteries. These motors combine to produce 483 horsepower (360 Kilowatts) as well as 516 pound-feet (706 Newton-meters). There are three battery options: 75 kilowatt hours, 100 kWh and 150 kWh.
Nio claims that the ET5 can reach speeds of 62 mph (100 kmh), in a mere 4.3 seconds. The range of the ET5 is 341 miles (550km) with the 75-kWh battery, 435 miles (705 km) with a 100 kWh battery and 621 miles (1,001km) with a 150 kWh battery. According to the company, they will start delivering ET5s by September 2022. The ET5 is priced at 328,000 yuan (or $51,447 at the current exchange rate), before any government subsidies. The price drops to 258,000 Yuan (or just over $40,000.) Nio will also sell the ET5 in Germany and the Netherlands in 2022, along with Norway and China. For now, there are no details about US plans.
