For a Japanese one-make racing series, the Toyota GR86 will be available in a matching version.
To give Japanese drivers a competitive racing series, the 2022 Subaru BRZ as well as the Toyota GR86 Basic models will be available. Modifications have been made to the vehicles to improve safety on track and reliability while lapping a circuit. Each vehicle receives a 6-point roll cage that has protective bars running horizontally. This provides extra protection for the sides. Eyebolts are available to attach a safety harness on the driver’s seat. This package also includes new floor mats that fit around the roll cage.
The cars are equipped with an air-cooled oil cooler to improve reliability. Cooling fins are installed on the rear differential cover. Both are available with steel wheels.
The road-going engine is the same powertrain as in Japan. The flat four-cylinder, naturally aspirated, 2.4-liter engine produces 232 horsepower (173 milliwatts) and 184 pound-feet (253 Newton-meters). All of these race cars use a six speed manual. Subaru estimates it can sell 30 BRZ Cup Car Basics each year. Toyota didn’t provide an estimate in its announcement.
Five races will be held in the 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR86/BRZ Cup Series. The race will begin at Fuji Speedway on July 16, 2022. It will also stop at Sportsland Sugo and Tokachi Speedway as well as the Suzuka Circuit and the Okayama International Circuit. There are two classes in the GR86/BRZ Cup: Clubman and Professional. The Professional series is designed for professional drivers. Some of these drivers also compete in Super GT. Clubman is open to amateurs.
Both of these cars are affordable by race car standards. Subaru costs 3,338,500 Japanese yen (or $28,900 at the current exchange rate). The Toyota is slightly less expensive at 3,334,000 Japanese yen ($28.870). The track-only Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport costs $229,000 in comparison.
