Changan UNI-V Is Aggressive-Looking, Underpowered Sports Sedan From China

A new generation of sports cars is emerging from China.

We discussed the GAC Empow, a Chinese sports car that is cheaper and less powerful than the Honda Civic Si, a few weeks back. Although it is not available in the United States, we received positive responses from our readers so we decided to look at another sports car from the same market. Meet the Changan UNIV.

Changan, a Chinese state owned automaker, is based in Chongqing. One of its latest models looks like a sporty sedan. The vehicle is quite aggressive at the front, according to a video by WheelsboyChe Ge. There’s a very unconventional-looking front fascia with two wide air openings in the corners and an interesting semi-closed-off radiator grille. The UNI-V appears very much like a liftback from the side. It has a sloped roofline, large rear windows and a large back window. There’s also an electronic controlled spoiler behind it. The rear fascia has coast-to-coast LED lights, a large diffuser and two integrated tailpipes. It is sleek and modern looking, with some European influences, such as Peugeot and Audi.

The cabin is filled with Peugeot vibes. We are especially impressed by the two-stage dashboard and the small oval-shaped steering wheel. There are four screens in total – two on each side of the instrument cluster, and one on the middle console for the infotainment. The material quality appears to be good, as we can see from the video. The UNI-V’s 1.5-liter engine is smaller than its GAC counterpart. It doesn’t match the aggressive exterior. It produces a total of 188 horsepower (138 Kilowatts) with 222 pound-feet (399 Newton-meters). The car’s power is channeled to the front wheels by a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. We believe it has similar performance to the GAC Empow with the same powertrain configuration.
