The new factory will be located near Wolfsburg’s main plant.
Volkswagen announced that it passed a resolution allowing the construction of a new plant to produce the all-electric Trinity. The flagship model, which was first announced in 2021 will be the foundation for the next generation zero-emission VW cars.
The new factory will be located near VW’s Wolfsburg main plant. This factory is a crucial component of Volkswagen’s largest modernization programme in its history. VW estimates that the investment amount is around EUR2Billion or $2.2B at current exchange rates.
“The Supervisory Board’s decision is a significant milestone in the transformation of our brand, and for the future of Wolfsburg’s production facility. Ralf Brandstatter, Volkswagen CEO, stated that this decision will strengthen and sustain the main plant’s competitiveness and give the workforce a solid long-term outlook.
“We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by creating Trinity and the new factory, and making Wolfsburg the global leader for efficient and cutting-edge vehicle production. This proves that Germany can become a centre of industry and the economic transformation it has undergone is possible.
Construction of the new Wolfburg plant to serve the Trinity will begin in spring 2023. The new site will comply with high environmental standards, and will take into account building and environmental law.
VW stated that the Trinity would be on the assembly line by 2026. It is expected that the net carbon neutral model will be constructed using the most innovative manufacturing techniques. This model will serve as a guide for all other Volkswagen manufacturing locations worldwide. The production target time for each vehicle is 10 hours.
VW claims that the Trinity will be capable of Level 4 autonomous driving upon launch. It will also have a quick charging time and a range exceeding 700 km (435 miles).
