The new rear-wheel drive machine was a hit with our spy spies.
Our spies spotted what appeared to be an all electric BMW M2 test mule in northern Europe yesterday. Now we have new photos. The M2 is the classic inline-six model, with its rear-wheel drive layout and a manual gearbox. It was seen just outside the Nurburgring, covered in a lot of makeup to conceal its production body.
BMW has yet not revealed the details. Coupe of the next-generation 2 Series It seems that the range-topping model isn’t far off, considering the vehicle in question appears almost ready to shed its camouflage. It’s easy to see why this model will be at the top in the 2er food chain, thanks to its massive front brakes and quad exhausts.
While the heavy disguise serves its purpose of covering the car’s appearance, you can still see that the M2 has a unique door handle design with a ridiculously fake white sticker above it. Zoom in to see tiny rivets that hold additional layers of camo on the rear pillar. This is likely to conceal the Hofmeister kink. This isn’t your average 2 Series. A subtle spoiler on the trunk lid further indicates that this isn’t your everyday model.
BMW’s 2 Series range will only feature the standard coupe and its M2 high-performance counterpart. The Active Tourer minivan, and the Gran Coupe, are both built on front-wheel drive architectures with xDrive. We don’t have any spy shots of a convertible that will retain the tail-happy layout so we are unsure if there will be another 2 Series with this roof.
BMW M will likely pack the new M4’s 3.0-liter engine in its engine bay. However, it will be dialed down to ensure that it doesn’t step on the big brother’s toes. It will be able to produce more than 400 horsepower in its base form. We expect it to have spicy derivatives later in the decade.
The standard 2 Series Coupe might be available before the end, so the M2 should debut sometime in 2022.
