Mutilated engine innards literally fell on the spectators in front of them.
SpaceX has been dominating news cycles over the past few months, with spectacular explosions and landing procedures for its Starship test vehicle fleet. Although we would never believe that SpaceX and an old Dodge pickup have anything in common, the video above clearly shows why. We don’t believe that because of the crazy explosion.
High-performance engines are not for everyone. The project vehicle in this instance is an older Dodge Ram pickup truck with a powerful Cummins I6 turbo-diesel engine. whoa Nelly is this turbo-charged thing. Power Driven Diesel in Utah is responsible for the project. While we don’t know all the details, the video above shows that they had 250 pounds of boost. This figure might seem unbelievable to those not familiar with aftermarket diesel, but diesel design allows for insane levels of boost.
This Cummins engine was already well into the insane zone, as it had previously produced 2,700 horsepower (2.013 kilowatts). However, being at an event for diesel-specific events like Ultimate Callout Challenge is not enough to draw attention. This engine had a 100-hp 76-kW shot of nitrous oxide and was ready to go with a goal of 3,000 horsepower (2,237kW).
Although we don’t know if the goal was achieved, we do know what occurred when the nawzz switch was pushed. The 12-valve engine let loose in dramatic fashion and, not unlike SpaceX’s Starship Testing, all internals of the engine were launched high into the atmosphere. It’s not 30,000 feet, parts fell on the spectators. At least one piston flew all the way to the top billboards. It bounced off the sign before landing in the bleachers. That’s one engine detonation you should remember, folks.
Thankfully, no one was hurt and Power Driven Diesel’s crew were happy to get the job done. It’s now back to the drawing board for The Godfather,
