2022 Toyota 4Runner Drives better with New TRD Sport Trim

The 4Runner rides smoother on pavement thanks to a new suspension system.

The Toyota 4Runner is a capable SUV, but it’s not a Jeep Wrangler. The 4Runner is capable of handling all terrain, from the SR5 base model to the TRD Pro. What if you need one that is more road-friendly? The new 4Runner TRD sport is the answer.

For 2022, the Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport joins our lineup. It features unique design elements such as color-keyed accents at the grille and a TRD scoop on the hood. Also, 20-inch aluminum wheels with dark gray accents are included. To make this model stand out, the roof rails are now gloss black and there is additional detail on the rear and front bumpers. All 2022 4Runners come standard with LED headlights, fog lights, and TRD Sport.

Toyota engineers have tweaked the suspension beneath the shiny sheet metal. TRD Sport comes standard with the Cross-Linked Relative Abssorber System (X-REAS), which adjusts damping for cornering. Toyota claims that the 4Runner’s advanced suspension makes it better for off-road driving.

The 4Runner can still be driven off-road. TRD Sport is available in two- or four-wheel drive configurations. The 2WD model has a limited slip differential and the 2WD model has a two-speed transfer box. The TRD Sport has 9.0 inches of ground clearance, while the 4WD version offers 9.6 inches.

The traditional cloth seats are replaced by SofTex faux leather with grey stitches. A TRD shifter, TRD Sport-branded mats and a TRD Sport-branded floor rug complete the sporty look. The 8.0-inch touchscreen of the previous model is still available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as Amazon Alexa.

The 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V6 engine is at the core of the package. It produces 270 horsepower (201kilowatts) as well as 278 pound-feet (377newton-meters). This engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Toyota Safety Sense P is also available to buyers. It includes a precollision system and pedestrian detection as well as automatic high beam headlights and high-speed adaptive cruise controls.

Toyota has not yet listed the price. The base SR5 model is $36,765 while the TRD Off Road costs $40,730. So we expect that the TRD Sport will be somewhere between them.
