Obscure Vxen 21 TD Camper Up for Sale with BMW Diesel Power

Low mileage for three owners

Many people associate William “Bill” T. Collins with the DeLorean CMC-12. He is well-known in the automotive industry for more than the car featured in the Back to the Future film. After 20 years as an engineer at General Motors where he designed the GTO and Grand Am, Bob Dewey helped him to co-found Vixen Motor Co. His engineering talents for building advanced vehicles reached their peak with the Vixen 21 TDC camper.

Many call the 21 TD the “drivers RV”, due to its low center gravity, wide stance and low drag coefficient (0.30), the 21 TD was built during a period of imminent gas price rises. It was designed to be comfortable, efficient, and easy to drive. In 1986, the Industrial Design Society of America awarded the project the Industrial Design Excellence Award. This was the first award for a vehicle other that an automobile.

However, things didn’t go according to plan and production of Vixen motorhome ceased in 1989. There were approximately 300 of these models, with one remaining example being offered for sale in the Netherlands. This is chassis number 41. It was registered in the country last January. According to the seller, he is the third owner and retains all invoices and documents from the beginning. The second owner kept a detailed record of all fuelings in a notebook.

The machine is described as in excellent condition and everything works as it should. The 2.4-liter BMW Inline-Six diesel engine produces 115 horsepower (85 Kilowatts) or 162 pound-feet (220 Newton meters) of torque. Average fuel consumption for the motorhome is about 28 MPG.

What is the price? The current owner is asking for EUR39,900. That’s approximately $48,650 at current exchange rates.
