This is the best use we have ever seen of a Yugo.
The Yugo economic car is probably familiar to you. Many Yugo owners lost their Yugos within a year due to its poor construction and low durability. The Yugo wasn’t very good at driving a car so it was used as a centerpiece of an art exhibition in the 1990s. It found its true purpose as a piece visual art and a new life.
Kevin O’Callaghan, a professor at Manhattan School of Visual Arts, had a task for his students. For a gallery event, turn the Yugo into whatever they can imagine. O’Callaghan was capable of easily purchasing 39 Yugos for under $3,600. This gave his students a blank canvas to express their creativity.
At the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, 19 repurposed Yugos displayed. These Yugos have been repurposed for a variety of purposes.
A Yugo confessional is designed to feel and look like a Catholic Church. There’s also a Yugo toaster that makes huge slices of bread and a Yugo fireplace for when you are done with Yugos. These Yugos are far cheaper than large blocks of marble or canvas of gallery-quality quality, with an average price of $100.
The Yugo was not a successful car but it did find new life as an art piece for free thinkers who wanted to share their social commentary. This higher calling is something that no other car can claim. It shows that even though you may fail at one thing it doesn’t mean that you won’t find success elsewhere.
