A new generation of batteries will be a boon for the device.
Volvo now has a partner in its plan to become fully electric by the end the decade. Northvolt, a Swedish battery manufacturer, will assist the manufacturer in developing and assembling more sustainable batteries that will be used in the next generation of pure-electric Volvo and Polestar cars. The new XC60 will be one of the first fully-electric mass-production models from the core brand.
Volvo’s ambitious plan calls for at least half its production to be pure EVs by 2020. The company then plans to make 100% electric cars by 2030. The next-generation XC60, which will be produced in a joint venture with Northvolt, will likely lead the revolution.
CarAdvice reports that the new premium crossover will be available in 2024. However, not much else is known. The new model will not be available with combustion power, but it is too early to confirm this given that it is only three years away from being on the showroom floor.
Volvo states that the joint venture with Northvolt will see the establishment of a new research-and-development center in Sweden as the first step. This will open in 2022. If all goes according to plan, the two companies will create a new European battery factory with a potential output of 50 gigawatts per year. This new plant will produce 100 percent clean energy and create approximately 3,000 jobs.
Hakan Samuelsson (Volvo’s boss) explained that Northvolt will supply high-quality and more sustainable batteries for pure electric cars. “Working closely together with Northvolt will also enable us to strengthen and expand our internal development capabilities.”
Volvo will reveal a technology roadmap and production plan next week on June 30. This should shed more light on the brand’s future plans. Keep watching!
