This is not a V6 standard with turbocharger.
The new Acura Type S debuted last year and has been widely praised by media outlets. On June 27, two TLX Type S racecars will take on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It seems that almost everyone has seen the new TLX Type S, except buyers. This week, the new sedan is finally in dealerships. Acura would like to tell you about the turbo V6 underneath.
This is the core of the video, but here’s an overview. Acura did not just take the familiar 3.5-liter V6 and scale it down to add a turbocharger. The new 3.0-liter engine was actually developed by engineers from Japan and the United States. They drew on expertise from both the Honda Civic Type R as well as the NSX powertrain program. Acura’s engine plant is in Anna, Ohio.
It was crucial to keep the DOHC V6 small and strong. The engine nerds will love the forged steel crankshaft, six-bolt main caps and the forged connecting rods. It’s a 24-valve arrangement that has variable timing on the intake and exhaust cams. At peak boost, the turbo pumps 15.1 psi into your engine.
Although there is much more to the mill, most people only care about the performance. The 355 horsepower (265 Kilowatts) and 354 pounds-feet (354 Newton-meters), boosted V6 produce 355 horsepower. Acura claims maximum torque can be found at 1,400 revs due to the twin-scroll turbo. We have personally experienced the Type S’s low-end drive on Laguna Seca. The sedan’s powerband is thick and linear, which makes it lag-free. We wish it had more power to allow its all-wheel drive system to handle better, but the TLX TypeS was plenty fun as-is.
The 2021 Acura TLX Type S starts at $52,300 (53,325 including destination charges), which is lower than most of its Japanese and German counterparts. It will be interesting to see what buyers think of this sports sedan now that it has finally reached dealerships.
