Some 2011-2020 Mustangs may be affected.
Three months ago, Ford paid millions to Focus and Fiesta owners of vehicles with the PowerShift auto transmission. According to a lawyer, the automaker could have to buy back defective cars at a cost of $22,000 per piece. This could amount to “potentially 500 million.” Ford has a problem with another transmission, and it’s not an automatic.
A new class action lawsuit was brought to our attention from . The Drive will bring legal action against the company over the six-speed manual gearbox in the Mustang’s sports car. It has the codes MT82-D4 and MT82. The lawsuit claims that the transmissions slip, jerk and engage harshly. They also clash gears and suffer premature wear.
The plaintiffs in Gregoria vs. Ford Motor Company claim that the problems persist even after transmissions have been repaired. The Drive claims the issue stems from “a poor design that causes shift shafts, shift forks and clutch assemblies to fail” but the NHTSA did not find any safety hazards.
Ford acknowledged the problems and ordered dealers to drain and fill the transmissions. They also had to replace parts like the shift forks (synchronizer hubs and sleeves), clutch pedal position switches and the gearshift lever. However, only three percent of all transmissions have the same problems according to Ford’s internal investigation.
The new lawsuit claims that Ford’s decision not to use Chinese-made Getrag transmissions in order to save money led to the problems. The automaker claimed that the problems are due to normal wear and tear.
