Although the Mazda Miata is known for being a light car, a new report suggests that the next-generation model may weigh less than 2,000 lbs (907kg).

InsideLine cites a “senior intelligible” who says engineers were given the task of reducing curb weight by at least 720 lbs (327kg) from its current curb weight, 2,480 lbs (1.125 kg). The car would weigh in at 1,760 lbs (798 kilograms).

The next-generation Mazda Miata could have the lightest version yet

According to reports, the Miata will have a lightweight steel body, a smaller engine, and a minimal interior. To save weight, the Miata could be stripped of its glovebox and manual.

Although this sounds very exciting, the source does not believe Mazda will achieve their weight goal. The next-generation Miata will be lighter than the current model, however.
