2019 Toyota 86: The Same Go, But With More Show

Toyota unveils limited TRD Special Edition.

Japan is not hearing the cries for more power from its Toyota 86 sportscar. The automaker will keep horsepower and torque the same for 2019, but it will offer a limited-run TRD Special Edition trim.

The 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition is limited to 1,418 units. It receives many upgrades that do not have anything to do with power. The coupe’s handling is improved by the addition of performance parts. The SACHS dampers increase steering response, while the four-piston front Brembo brakes and the two-piston rear Brembo brakes offer enhanced stopping power. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires wrap around alloy wheels 18 inches.

Raven black is the only color available for the TRD Special Edition. Retro 80s-style tricolor graphic runs from the front fender to the top of the door handle. It looks like something out of an Atari gaming console. The TRD body kit includes a front bumper, side sills and rear bumpers as well as a spoiler, diffuser, and spoiler that show off the TRD stainless-steel exhaust tips.

The TRD Special Edition gets a red-and-black-trimmed steering wheel and red contrast stitching. The red-and black theme continues with the sport bucket seats. Granlux, a suede-like fabric, is featured on the instrument cluster’s top. It is again adorned with red contrast stitching that continues throughout the interior. On the dashboard, you will find the “TRD” logo. The look is completed with red seatbelts.

The TRD Special Edition gets a lot of goodies. However, the 2.0-liter flat four engine still delivers 205 horsepower and 156 pounds-feet torque when it is paired with the manual transmission. The automatic reduces power and torque by five.

Standard 86 includes LED headlights, color matching power mirrors, chrome-tipped dual-exhaust, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The 86 GT includes LED fog lights, an aerodynamic floor undercover and heated mirrors. It also features a matte-black rear wing that has color-matching endplates.

Next month will see the 2019 Toyota 86 GT, 86 GT and 86 RDS Special Edition go on sale. Toyota did not provide pricing information for the 86 GT or 86 GT. This could lead to a slight increase in price. The price for the 86 TRD Special Edition is $32,420.
