It’s not easy to lose 22 pounds.
Honda updated the Civic Type-R in Chicago in February. The Limited Edition Civic Type R was also introduced by the Japanese marque. This is a bid to regain the Nurburgring record it held once again.
The lightweight construction of the Civic Type R Limited Edition is another characteristic. Honda had to take out the rear heater ducts and sound-deadening to save 28 pounds (12.7 kg), while the wheels were upgraded to forged BBS aluminum wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. According to the video, this reduced the weight by 22 lbs (10 kilograms).
What is the secret to the BBS forged wheels? Honda has released an official video, a kind of How it’s Made, to explain the details behind the beloved lightweight BBS wheels. Although the video is short, it’s easy to follow if you don’t have enough time.
Forging is a process that uses heat and pressure to form aluminum, rather than shaping them through molten steel. This ensures that the structure is fine and lightweight without sacrificing strength or lightness.
You can see the entire process in the video at the top of this page. To fully appreciate the Civic Type R Limited Edition, we recommend that you view it.
We are still waiting for Honda’s attempt at Nurburgring. It broke the FWD Suzuka record in recent times, so it is only a matter time before this once forbidden fruit achieves its goal, if at all.
