Maserati Folgore Grecale Spied With Folgore GranTurismo As EV Duo

Maserati Folgore Grecale Spied With Folgore GranTurismo As EV Duo

Tomorrow’s launch of the ICE-powered crossover is a good sign, but the EV will not arrive until 2023.

Grecale fatigue? Given the number of spy shots and teasers we have shared over the last few months, it’s understandable. Tomorrow, March 22nd, Maserati will unveil the sub-Levante sub-Levante model. However, only versions with combustion engines will be shown. The company sporting the trident logo claims that the electric model will arrive in 2023.

Modena’s ICE-less Grecale, like all Modena’s EVs moving forward, will be prefixed with the “Folgore”, to indicate it’s part a separate zero emissions lineup. This will include the GranTurismo, which was teased last week. A few spy shots of it are included in the attached. The “Lightning”, a dynamic electric duo, was captured in northern Europe during winter testing. The EVs were dressed in a different camo than the Maserati gasoline-powered prototypes.

It’s completely covered but you can still tell that the silent Grecale will not ride on an EV platform. How? It is almost identical in shape to its gasoline counterpart. Stellantis, parent company, is currently working on several bespoke architectures of electric cars. The Folgore-branded crossover will utilize an adaptation from the Giorgio platform that was shared with the ICE model as well as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

A report by Automotive News Europe published a month ago states that the $1-billion architecture used with the Giulia sedan is being “heavily revised” by Maserati. It will be able to charge at 800-volt technology to reduce charging times. Although details are not clear about the power it will deliver, logic suggests that it should pack quite the punch considering the GranTurismo’s 1,200 horsepower.

Folgore Grecale will not be able to match this. It should be a crossover so it will have all-wheel drive. This means that it will be equipped with two electric motors. The story goes beyond horsepower, as e-motors deliver a lot of torque almost immediately.

Folgore will now include EV versions MC20 supercar, as well as next-generation Quattroporte/Levante models. The electric version will be available on all Maserati models by 2025. Five years later, the old-fashioned combustion engine will no longer exist. The future of the Ghibli smaller sedan is unknown, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t get renewed.
