It will not be easy due to ongoing supply chain problems and shortages of semiconductors.
The Felicity Ace, a cargo vessel on its way from Germany, to the US, caught on fire and eventually sank on March 1,. It carried around 4,000 VW Group vehicles with it to the bottom. Lamborghini had 15 cars to replace on the ship’s wreck, and Porsche now says it plans to replace over 1,000 of the vehicles, according to a new Autocar report.
Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, relayed the information to journalists during the annual results call. Blume stated that it was “up to us” to replace the cars. This will be difficult as the brand is facing significant supply chain problems and semiconductor shortages, just like the rest. Porsche is optimistic, but neither situation will be favorable. Blume said that Porsche has been “accustomed to dealing with challenges for the past two years.”
Blume did not provide any information about when customers would get their replacement vehicles. Blume also didn’t specify which models they lost. Lamborghini has lost 15 Aventador Ultimae models. However, the cargo ship also transported Urus SUVs as well as Huracan supercars. Lamborghini was responsible for 85 of the vehicles that were lost in the accident. The VW Group began notifying customers affected by the incident last month. Estimates suggest that the cars lost were worth more than $401million.
Bentley, Audi and VW all lost their vehicles to the ship. Audi already stated that it will make an additional 1,800 vehicles to offset the loss. Bentley intends to replace half the 189 vehicles it lost aboard the ship. Bentley will replace half the cars that were lost on the ship by the end this year.
There were hopes that the ship could be salvaged with a large salvage ship towing it to safer areas. However, this didn’t happen. The ship was doomed by the extensive damage. In international waters, the ship is now two miles below ocean’s surface. It happened approximately 220 nautical miles from the Azores Islands in Portugal, North Atlantic. The ship’s fate is unknown at this time.
