Hyundai’s Robot Service Dog can Now See in Full Color and Dance Better

Boston Dynamics’ Spot is available for the forthcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.

Hyundai purchased Boston Dynamics, resulting in a factory service robot that was based on Spot, a robot-dog. The robotics and engineering company bought Boston Dynamics, updating the adorable robot with new sensors, a tablet controller and a faster charger. It also showed better dancing skills, as shown in the embedded video. Spot now boasts five stereo cameras that provide full-color imagery. The robot doesn’t require color to see but the operator does need it. Scout remote operation software and tablets make it easier to decode the environment of the robot. Spot gets a tablet. This will be the most significant upgrade for robot dog operators. The tablet can be used to drive the robot, or to perform autonomous missions. It is now smarter.

Spot’s charger has been upgraded to be faster and more intelligent. It takes just an hour to charge the battery to its full capacity. However, swapping batteries is the fastest and easiest way to get Spot back in operation.

Since Hyundai purchased Boston Dynamics in 2020 Hyundai has used the robot in a variety of ways. Kia’s South Korean plant uses one since September 2021. It is a Factory Safety Service Robot that was designed for various industrial tasks including people detection, high temperature situations, fire hazards monitoring, and checking whether a door is open or closed.

Spot was also featured in a promotional Hyundai video that featured BTS, the global brand ambassador for Hyundai. Although the robot dog displayed some impressive dancing skills, we believe its newfound talent as shown in the video atop that page can surpass that. We are now seeing Spot in a completely different light than our initial impression. We hope that it stays focused on factory service and dancing, not picking up weapons as in Black Mirror’s Metalhead episodes.
