Supercharged and turbocharged Jetta
The UK Volkswagen Jetta TSI Sport was unveiled today at the Autosport International racing event at Birmingham’s NEC. On Easter Monday, the Jetta TSI Racer will race for the first time at Oulton Park Volkswagen Racing Cup.
Volkswagen Racing UK has increased the horsepower of the turbocharged, supercharged 1.4-liter 16-valve engine from 170 to 230 hp. Melissa Wright, Volkswagen Racing UK’s head of marketing, stated that the engine was last year under the bonnet. “We learned a lot during 2007 and have incorporated that knowledge into our new installation.”
The supercharger is engine-driven and the turbocharger is exhaust gas-powered. Turbo kicks in at higher engine speeds. This allows for high torque and no turbo lag across a broad range of engine RPMs. In 2006, the International Engine of the Year Awards named the engine the Best New Engine.
