Cancelled Camaro Z/28 – High-Revving Corvette Z06 DOHC C8 V8

This vehicle might even have been available with a manual transmission, which is not the Z06

There was a rumor that Chevrolet had stopped plans to make a sixth-gen Camaro Z/28 in 2019. A Motor Trend anonymous source, Deep Burble, is now shedding some light on Chevy’s plans for the axed high-performance model. This was a great opportunity for the auto industry to lose out on something.

The Z/28 will have the 5.5-liter V8 with flat-plane crank, dual overhead camshafts. This powerplant is also going into the Corvette Z06. This engine produces 617 horsepower (460kilowatts). It might also have a redline of up to 9,000 rpm. The fifth-gen Camaro Z/28 featured a 7.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 that produced 505 horsepower (376 kW) as well as 481 pound-feet (652 Nm) of torque.

Chevy may offer the Z/28 with a manual transmission to make it even more appealing. The Corvette C8 Z06 won’t have this option because there’s not enough demand for it.

Deep Burble also spoke briefly about the Camaro’s current woes. “[Chevy] is like, ‘We don’t believe it’s selling. An anonymous insider said Motor Trend that it’s “so much better than the competitors.” “[Chevy] fails a lot to see that most people choose styling over performance.”

According to an earlier rumor, the sixth-gen Camaro Z/28 project was cancelled. The project had reached the powertrain planning and business planning stages. The company was deciding whether the 6.6-liter LT3 or successor to the fifth-generation model’s LS7 engine would be installed.

Rumours persist that Chevy won’t introduce a seventh-generation Camaro after the current model is retired. The vehicle continues to sell poorly. Deliveries fell to 29,775, a decrease of 38.3 percent compared to the 48,265 units delivered in 2019.
