VW’s MEB platform could be used to bring back the RWD layout.
The current Volkswagen Beetle model is the second generation and is based on the platform from the old Golf 6. While the German manufacturer is already working on Golf 8 the adorable Beetle won soon get a successor. It could, however, be a major breakthrough if and when it happens.
A new report by Autocar states that Volkswagen is looking into an all electric Beetle with 4 doors, according to a recent report. This information is based upon recent comments by Herbert Diess, VW’s head of design, and Klaus Bischoff, the brand’s chief designer, who both suggested that a Beetle-electric vehicle (EV) could be possible, but only after the launch of some other important electric Volkswagen vehicles.
According to British magazine, Bischoff may have already drawn a design for the successor to the four-door Beetle. However, it will take the automaker two to three years before they can make a decision about its production. Volkswagen will continue to focus on the launch of a range of mainstream electric cars before that.
He stated that Autocar has the responsibility of getting volume models moving. These cars are full of complex technology, and it can become overwhelming if you try to do too much. We can then move on to more exotic cars and into the realm of emotion.
The smart MEB platform is used for electric vehicles if the model is approved. This architecture will bring advantages to packaging, allowing Volkswagen to keep the Beetle’s iconic shape but also offer more interior space and comfort. The MEB underpinnings may also allow for the Beetle to return to its RWD design.
