This race has been awaited for many years.
It was rare to find the Mercedes-AMG G65. This is a true off-roader that has a twin-turbo V12 under its hood. It’s an incredible combination. The V12-powered model was removed from the second-generation GClass in 2018 and was replaced indirectly by the G63 with an V8 unit. Although many were disappointed, do you really need a V12 engine in an SUV when there is the incredible 4.0 twin-turbo engine V8 available? Let’s see what happens.
This page’s video is from the ArabGT.com channel, YouTube. It currently has nearly three million subscribers. The nine-minute video does not have English subtitles. However, you should be able to understand most of the important details without having to know a word. The story basically says that the team raced a G63 against a G65 using the first-gen G-Class.
The lighter, newer model is powered by 577 horsepower (430kilowatts), which can be used to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in a little over 4.5 seconds. The V12-powered model is slower at 62 mph (100 km/h) at 5.2 seconds. These figures are factory estimates and are not representative of the vehicles’ actual performance.
The drag racing starts with a standing start chase. It looks tricky. The G63 was not the fastest and couldn’t catch the G65 until the last lap. It is not clear if the V12-powered G-Class was faster or if it was the slower reaction that decided first race. The G63’s full potential is shown in rolling-start races. You can see the results in the video at top of the page.
