2022 BMW 2 Series Displays in Its Purple Metal Skin at Goodwood FoS

It’s at least not silvery or gray.

BMW presented its all new 2 Series to the public on July 6. This was just before the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The historic hillclimb is over and we can now see the new 2 Series through moving pictures. The big question is: Does the 2 Series look better in videos (and theoretically in person) than in photos?

We don’t have the answer to that question for two reasons. We only have the M240i xDrive model, which has a totally different nose to the base 230i. The M240i’s front is busy, with lots of angles and vents. There are also curious contour lines that flank the grille, which mimic the much larger grille on the M230i. 4 Series . It almost seems like BMW designers planned to go big with their 2 Series grille but then decided against it. We are glad that things stayed small, for all its worth.

The second video is from BMW UK. It shows us around a static vehicle with BMW showing you the best angles. We may be picky, but considering all the fuss and circumstance that BMW styling has experienced over the past few years, it’s exciting to see the car through an independent lens. We are also very interested in driving the M240ixDrive, which boasts a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 382-horsepower (285 watts) and a total of 382 horsepower. BMW claims it can reach 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds when driven through all four wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. There is no plan to offer a manual transmission at this time.

After digesting the 2 Series for a few days, there are a few things we found to be quite interesting. We found many people comparing the new model to the old generation. But, it was the bad thing that could have happened with the huge 4 Series grille. This is a sad commentary on BMW’s current design direction. However, choosing purple to launch the 2 rather than a common shade of gray is quite telling. We wonder how BMW will push younger buyers to buy the new coupe when such exciting colors are usually left to M models.

We are excited to see the 2 Series in person. We’ll be watching the new 2 Series race down the hill at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
