It will be produced in a limited number of 765 units, just like the previously sold-out coupe.
McLaren just revealed its most powerful open-top supercar yet. The 765LT Spider is a coupe-inspired supercar that combines a powerful engine with a light body and a motorsport-inspired cabin.
According to the automaker, the convertible will have the same structural rigidity levels as the 765LT Coupe. However, this is at a cost of only 108 pounds (49 kg) more weight. This is primarily due to the retractable hardtop with accompanying operating mechanism. The 765LT Spider is 176 lbs (80kg) lighter than the 720S Spider at 3,060lbs (1,388kg).
One-piece carbon fiber components can be folded at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h) using an electrically operated hardtop. McLaren is proud that the structure’s strength and stiffness are so strong that no bracing is needed over the coupe. Rollover protection is provided by carbon fiber structural supports at its back.
McLaren’s 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 engine produces 765 horsepower (570 Kilowatts) with 590 pound-feet (890 Newton-meters) torque. The engine is mated with an automatic gearbox that has revised gear ratios to allow for a 15 percent faster gear change than the 720S Spider.
According to McLaren, the acceleration from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) takes only 2.8 seconds while the quarter-mile sprint takes just 10 seconds. McLaren claims that the top speed is 205 mph (330 kph). But, McLaren also says that the 765LT Spider convertible LT model is the fastest it has ever made.
James Warner, McLaren’s Chief Engineer, explains, “We designed the 765LT Spider as a car that isn’t compromiseable, exciting and rewarding to drive, but with all the connection, closeness and engagement – with so much more of that incredible LT sound, even nearer to the driver.”
McLaren will produce 765 copies of its most powerful convertible, just like the coupe. The 2021 production is already sold at a starting cost of PS310,500 (US price not available).
