Citroen DS Reborn as Electric Restomod with Manual Gearbox

It is quieter and more powerful than its predecessor.

The Citroen DS remains one of the most interesting and unique cars ever produced. Its heritage is still in full force 66 years later. Electrogenic decided to redesign the model with a battery-powered conversion to reflect the innovative spirit of the original DS.

Oxford-based company kept the original car’s aerodynamic design but switched the gasoline engine to a brushless electric motor that produced 120 horsepower (89 Kilowatts) as well as 173 pound-feet (253 Newton-meters). The original manual gearbox is still used to deliver the power to the front wheels.

A 48.5-kWh battery pack is housed inside the DS’s body and provides the powertrain with electric energy. The battery pack is 48.5-kWh and provides a driving range of approximately 140 miles (225 km) in real life. A 29-kW charger will charge the batteries within two hours. A combination of a stronger charger and a larger battery can be ordered by the customer to provide a longer range between charges.

The silky smooth hydro-pneumatic suspension is a key feature of the Citroen Ds. Electrogenic has improved the system further by replacing the mechanical pump with an electric pump that is quieter and provides a “more sophisticated ride” than the original.

The only visible differences between the original DS & the electric-powered version are the absence of exhaust pipes, and the distinctive decal “DS EV electronique” on the boot.

Steve Drummond, Electrogenic director, says that repowering old cars with all-electric drives brings many benefits. These include reliability, performance gains, and ease of use. Our conversions are designed to improve the car’s original characteristics. The Citroen DS is ideally suited for an electric conversion. Its quiet powertrain enhances the driving experience and perfectly matches the car’s character.
