The supercar manufacturer will be entering the mainstream segment.

Gordon Murry Automotive, the automaker that was founded by McLaren F1 designer and named after him, made waves with two supercars. Both the T.50 (old-school combustion-powered sports car) and T.33 (electric-powered sports car) are now sold out. The firm’s next products will be fully electric sport utility cars.

Although there is no official announcement yet from the company, Gordon Murray spoke to Autocar recently and stated that the new SUVs would “change the way people think about range anxiety” and vehicle dynamics. Although it is not clear what this means, the development of the new models is still in its early stages. However, it appears that they will be based on the T.50 or T.33 basic formula. Or, put simply, expect light and aerodynamically-efficient high-riding machines.

Although technical details are not available at this time, Murray did share some information about the nature of both SUVs. One model will have front-wheel drive and can accommodate four people. An all-wheel-drive model with five seating will be the more expensive. Both EV SUVs are affordable and as light as possible.

“It is absurd to have family cars weighing in at 2.5 tonnes and yet everyone is putting their weight into them the same way that OEMs do. Murray stated that there is a better way. The new products will be made using the iStream production process. Assembly is expected to be done in Windlesham in England. The Gordon Murray Group has invested PS300 million (377 million at current exchange rates) in a five-year expansion plan.

The T.33 , pictured above, is Gordon Murray Automotive’s most user-friendly vehicle. The T.33 is a supercar that’s naturally powered and produces 607 horsepower (or 453 kilowatts). It has a 3.9-liter V12 which turns the rear wheels. The T.33 is no longer available for purchase as it has been sold.
